Ps3 Eye Camera

As for the multitouch detection, the hardware uses a series of UV LEDs along with a modified PS3 eye camera. Arthur chose the reacTIVision software package to process the input from the camera. The ps3 eye camera isn't going to be a limitation. I have one, and it works great. The main limitation is going to be the clip for your lights. If you cheap out and build(or buy) a bad one, then the tracking is going to be sub-par. The PlayStation Eye camera is an integral part of PlayStation Move's experience. The camera tracks the sphere of the Move motion controller and your head movement to accurately read your every move. Crouch behind cover, or dodge an incoming attack - your movements will be accurately captured in-game.

[Henry Tonoyan] has started getting into OpenCV and digital control system projects. He needed a decent webcam that could do higher than standard frame rates. As it turns out, the PS3 Eye is actually a pretty capable little camera. Now that it’s kind of obsolete, you can have it for as little as $7 from places like Amazon!

  • I have been working on a driver for the PlayStation Eye Camera and the first beta release is now available on github! Happily there were lots of open source projects out there that were of great help, including the PS3 Eye Linux driver. For those who are unfamiliar with this camera, it's an extremely good value (only $7 on Amazon right now) and it has a decent sensor which is capable of 60 FPS.
  • With the exception of LittleBigPlanet and The Eye of Judgment, there hasn't been much reason to dust off the Eye. Well, put it to work! Get the camera off its lazy butt and have it become a fully.

The PS3 Eye has a standard USB interface, and after messing around with it a bit in Linux, [Henry] was able to adjust the frame rate settings for his application. He’s using a library called video for Linux with an application called qv4L2. It’s capable of 60fps at VGA, which we admit isn’t amazing, but at $7, we can’t complain — if you drop down to QVGA (320×240) you can go up to 120fps.

Seeing as the Eye has been out for over 7 years now, it has been used in quite a few hacks since then. From an actual eyeball tracker (seriously), to an interactive projection globe with touch tracking to even a physical tower defense game.
